Get ready to immerse yourself in the profound spirituality and vibrant living history of Kathmandu, a capital that offers everything from chaotic marketplaces to centuries-old sacred architecture. Picture yourself exploring the ancient pagodas and temples of Kathmandu Durbar Square, witnessing the sacred rituals along the Bagmati River at Pashupatinath Temple, and experiencing the spiritual calm of the massive Boudhanath Stupa. Before enjoying nourishing local specialties like Dal Bhat or Momos and receiving the legendary Nepali hospitality, venture just outside the city for unforgettable excursions. Discover the preserved medieval artistry and brickwork of Bhaktapur, explore the beautiful ancient kingdoms within Patan (Lalitpur) Durbar Square, and climb to the serene hilltop of Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple). Kathmandu promises an accessible and unforgettable journey that beautifully blends continuous living tradition, detailed Newari craftsmanship, and a globally famous culture of warmth and resilience.

Nepal attractions

Boudhanath Stupa

This massive, spherical white stupa is one of the largest in the world and serves as the epicenter of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. Pilgrims can be seen walking clockwise around the dome, spinning prayer wheels and chanting mantras throughout the day. The stupa's serene and powerful presence, crowned by the all-seeing eyes of the Buddha, provides a profound spiritual experience.

Pashupatinath Temple

Situated on the banks of the Bagmati River, this is Nepal's most sacred Hindu temple complex, dedicated to Lord Shiva. While only Hindus are permitted to enter the main golden-roofed pagoda, visitors can observe the cremation rituals that take place on the adjacent ghats along the riverbank. This complex offers a unique and vivid glimpse into the cycle of life and death central to Hindu beliefs.

Swayambhunath Temple

Perched atop a hill, this ancient Buddhist stupa and temple complex offers magnificent panoramic views of the entire Kathmandu Valley. Visitors must climb a long, steep staircase, where playful monkeys—considered holy—often greet them, to reach the main dome painted with the eyes of the Buddha. The site beautifully merges Buddhist and Hindu iconography, symbolizing the religious harmony in Nepal.

Bhaktapur Durbar Square

Bhaktapur is the most preserved of the three royal cities in the Kathmandu Valley, feeling like a living museum of medieval Newari art and architecture. Its Durbar Square is famous for the intricate wood carvings on palace windows, the towering Nyatapola Temple (Nepal's tallest pagoda), and the Golden Gate. Unlike Kathmandu and Patan, Bhaktapur maintains a quieter, distinctively medieval atmosphere perfect for an immersive day trip.

Patan Durbar Square

Located in the city of Lalitpur, Patan is known as the "City of Fine Arts" and boasts an unmatched concentration of Newari craftsmanship in its Durbar Square. The square is dominated by the exquisite stone-carved Krishna Mandir and the former royal palace, which now houses the Patan Museum. This area is a hub for metalwork and sculpting, allowing visitors to appreciate the skill of local artisans.

Nagarkot

This serene hill station is located about 32 kilometers outside of Kathmandu, making it an ideal day trip or overnight stay, particularly for sunrise viewing. Nagarkot provides arguably the best vantage point in the Kathmandu Valley to witness a vast panorama of the Himalayas, including Mount Everest on a clear day. The area is also popular for short hiking trails through quiet forests and villages.
