Why Singapore?
Singapore is what happens when a city takes the small stuff seriously. Trains run on time, the airport is arguably the world's best, the parks look designed, and yet the real charm is on the ground — at a Tekka Centre roti prata counter, at a hawker stall with a Michelin star, at a shophouse coffee joint in Tiong Bahru. It's the easiest country in Asia to travel with a mixed group, and increasingly worth its own 3–5 nights rather than just a stopover.
Highlights
Marina Bay
Singapore's postcard heart — walk the bay loop at dusk for the skyline, catch the free Spectra show outside Marina Bay Sands (~8 & 9pm), then head up to the SkyPark deck or a rooftop bar for the view.
Gardens by the Bay
A futuristic garden of giant 'Supertrees' & climate-controlled biodomes. Do the two domes (Cloud Forest's indoor waterfall is the star) in the heat of the day, then catch the free Supertree light show after dark. Book domes online.
Sentosa Island
Singapore's purpose-built fun island — Universal Studios is the headline, plus aquarium, luge & beaches. A full day (or two) for families. Book USS tickets ahead; arrive by cable car for the drama.
Orchard Road
The 2.2 km shopping mecca — a cool, air-conditioned escape from the heat. Even non-shoppers enjoy the festive Christmas light-up. Pretty Emerald Hill (heritage shophouses & bars) is a hidden gem just off the strip.
Chinatown
A vibrant heritage quarter of temples, shophouses & legendary hawker food (Maxwell's chicken rice; Michelin street stalls). Spectacular at Chinese New Year. Trendy bars hide on Ann Siang Hill & Club Street nearby.
Little India
Singapore's most sensory district — incense, garlands, spice shops & superb South Indian food (a familiar comfort for Indian travellers). Mustafa Centre is a sprawling 24-hour bazaar. Time it for Deepavali's incredible street lights.
Kampong Glam & Arab Street
The hip Malay-Arab quarter — the grand Sultan Mosque meets narrow, mural-covered Haji Lane packed with indie shops, cafes & bars. The city's most Instagrammable corner; great for an evening wander, food & shisha.
Singapore Zoo & Mandai Wildlife
Among the world's best wildlife parks, clustered at Mandai. The open-concept Zoo & after-dark Night Safari (explore by tram) are the highlights; Bird Paradise & River Wonders' pandas round it out. Pick 1–2 per day; book combo tickets.
Singapore Botanic Gardens
Singapore's UNESCO World Heritage garden — a tranquil tropical oasis with the world-famous National Orchid Garden. Free to enter (orchid garden ticketed). Go early to beat the heat; catch a free weekend concert on the lawn.
Clarke Quay & Singapore River
The buzzing nightlife & dining heart along the Singapore River. Take a bumboat cruise to see the bridges & skyline lit up, then pick a riverside restaurant or bar. Quieter, leafier Robertson Quay is great for brunch.
Civic District (Colonial Core)
Singapore's grand colonial core — world-class museums in heritage buildings, the iconic Raffles Hotel (have a Singapore Sling at the Long Bar) & the historic Padang. A cultured, air-conditioned half-day, walkable to Marina Bay.
Jewel Changi Airport
A destination in itself — the jaw-dropping indoor waterfall & forest inside Changi Airport, free to enter. Catch the evening light & sound show at the Rain Vortex. Perfect for a long layover or rainy afternoon; Canopy Park is ticketed.
Katong & Joo Chiat (Peranakan East)
A charming, less-touristed glimpse of old Singapore — pastel Peranakan shophouses (the Koon Seng Road row is famous), the original Katong laksa & a strong local-foodie scene. Pair with breezy East Coast Park for cycling & seafood.
Nature: Southern Ridges, MacRitchie & Pulau Ubin
Surprisingly wild for a city-state — rainforest treetop walks (MacRitchie), the sculptural Henderson Waves, and rustic Pulau Ubin, a time-capsule island reached by bumboat where you cycle past kampong houses & wetlands. Go early.
Day Trips: Bintan, Batam & Johor Bahru
Easy regional escapes — Bintan & Batam (Indonesia) for quick beach-and-spa breaks by ferry, and Johor Bahru (Malaysia) for Legoland & cheaper shopping/food. NOTE: these cross international borders — carry passports & check visa rules (Indonesia/Malaysia).

Know before you go
Entry / Visa (REQUIRED)
Unlike many regional neighbours, Indian passport holders DO need a visa for Singapore — there is no visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry. Apply for the Singapore e-Visa in ADVANCE via VFS Global centres in India, an authorised agent, or a local sponsor with SingPass (ICA does not take direct applications in India). Fee ~SGD 30 (≈ ₹1,800) + service fee; standard processing ~3 days (apply 1–2 weeks ahead). Need passport 6+ months, proof of accommodation, itinerary & funds. Carry a printout of the e-Visa.
MANDATORY — SG Arrival Card
ALL arrivals (even with a valid visa) must submit the free SG Arrival Card online, with an e-health declaration, within 3 days before arrival — use only the official ICA service. After clearing immigration you receive a digital e-Pass (Visit Pass) by email; the actual length of stay is granted on arrival.
Stopover Tip
Indians holding a valid US/UK/Australia/Japan visa with onward travel may use the Visa-Free Transit Facility (up to 96 hrs) to leave Changi during a layover — handy for a Singapore stopover. Verify current eligibility before relying on it.
Currency & Payments
Singapore Dollar (SGD). Cards, contactless & e-wallets are accepted almost everywhere (increasingly even at hawker stalls), so little cash is needed. ATMs are everywhere.
Connectivity
Cheap tourist SIM/eSIM (Singtel, StarHub, M1) at the airport; excellent island-wide 5G & widespread free public Wi-Fi.
Getting Around
A world-class MRT (metro) & bus network makes a car unnecessary — tap a contactless bank card or get an EZ-Link card. Grab for door-to-door; taxis are metered. The city is compact; most attractions are minutes from an MRT station.
It's Strict — Know the Rules
Singapore enforces fines for littering, jaywalking, and eating/drinking on the MRT, and bans chewing-gum import & vaping. Drug offences carry extreme penalties. Smoking is limited to designated areas. The city is spotless & very safe partly because rules are taken seriously — follow them.
Weather & Costs
Hot & humid all year with sudden downpours — carry a small umbrella, dress light, and use malls/museums as AC refuges. Singapore is expensive (especially hotels & alcohol); hawker centres are the delicious, budget-friendly answer.
Food
A world food capital — hawker centres are the star (Hainanese chicken rice, chilli crab, laksa, char kway teow, satay, roti prata). Little India & Tekka are excellent for Indian food; vegetarian & halal options are abundant everywhere (ideal for Indian travellers). Tap water is safe to drink.
Etiquette
Respect queue culture & cleanliness; remove shoes in homes, temples & mosques (dress modestly at religious sites). Tipping isn't expected (a service charge is usually included).
Suggested routes
3–4 days covers the essentials: Marina Bay + Gardens by the Bay; Sentosa/Universal Studios; the cultural trio (Chinatown, Little India, Kampong Glam); the Civic District; and Singapore Zoo/Night Safari, with shopping on Orchard Road. Add Bintan/Batam or Johor Bahru to extend. A superb stopover or family/first-timer Asia trip.
