Kazakhstan

Space-age skylines, endless steppe, and canyons that rival Arizona

6–8 days
Best: May–September (winter Dec–Feb for skiing)
Groups: 4–25

Why Kazakhstan?

The world's ninth-largest country still flies under most travellers' radar — which is exactly why it works. In one week you can go from Almaty's tree-lined streets and Soviet-era mosaics to Charyn Canyon (Grand Canyon's quieter cousin), to alpine lakes the colour of glacier melt, to eagle hunters on horseback out on the steppe. It's a bigger, wilder, more surprising trip than most people expect from Central Asia.

Highlights

Almaty

Kazakhstan's green, sophisticated cultural capital & gateway to the Tian Shan lakes & mountains. Literally the 'father of apples'. Best food scene in the country.

Astana

A purpose-built futuristic capital risen from bare steppe since 1997 — bold, surreal architecture. Spectacular in summer; pack serious gear in winter.

Shymbulak & Medeu

Ski or skate within an hour of the city. The Medeu–Shymbulak cable car gives superb Tian Shan views even for non-skiers. Easy half/full-day from Almaty.

Charyn Canyon

Kazakhstan's 'mini Grand Canyon' & the top day-trip from Almaty. Often combined with Kolsai/Kaindy lakes over 2 days. Bring water, sun cover & sturdy shoes.

Kolsai & Kaindy Lakes

Among Central Asia's most beautiful alpine scenery. Kaindy's drowned spruce forest (from a 1911 earthquake) is otherworldly. Homestay in Saty; pair with Charyn.

Big Almaty Lake

A jaw-dropping turquoise lake barely an hour from the city; colour shifts with season & light. High altitude — dress warm. Access can be restricted (border/water rules) — check ahead.

Altyn-Emel National Park

A remote, surreal desert park — climb the singing dune to hear its low hum and marvel at the striped Aktau hills. Needs a permit & guide/4x4; usually 2 days.

Turkestan

Kazakhstan's spiritual & Silk Road heart — the stunning 14th-c. Yasawi Mausoleum is the country's premier monument & a major pilgrimage site. A new tourist complex has modernised the visit.

Mangystau & Bozjyra

One of Earth's most otherworldly landscapes, booming with adventurous travellers. No facilities — go with an experienced operator, 4x4 & camping. Allow 3–5 days.

Aktau

A Soviet-built Caspian port & the launchpad for Mangystau expeditions — the only Kazakh city on the sea. Curiosity: streets have no names, only numbers.

Burabay (Borovoe)

Kazakhstan's favourite lake-and-forest retreat & an easy escape from Astana — crisp air, pretty lakes & granite peaks. Busy with locals in summer.

Shymkent

Kazakhstan's sunny, fast-growing third city with a strong Central Asian bazaar feel & great southern food — the natural base for Turkestan & the southern nature reserves.

Tamgaly Petroglyphs

An open-air gallery of prehistoric art in a sacred canyon — a quiet, atmospheric half/full-day from Almaty for history lovers. A guide brings the carvings to life.

Aksu-Zhabagly Reserve

A UNESCO biosphere and birthplace of the cultivated tulip — spring wildflower carpets are spectacular. Permit & guide needed; village homestays nearby. A real off-circuit gem.

Baikonur Cosmodrome

A bucket-list pilgrimage for space fans — but a restricted, Russia-leased zone needing official tours booked well in advance (often months). Launch dates shift; build in flexibility.

Lake Balkhash

A natural oddity — fresh in the west, salty in the east — and a low-key local summer escape. Not a polished resort; for travellers who love big, quiet, offbeat landscapes.

Plan this trip your way

Every EternaLink trip is built from scratch for your group. What that means in practice:

Custom itinerary — pacing, pauses, and priorities designed around you
Vetted local partners — the same on-ground teams we've worked with for years
24/7 support on trip — one person, one number, one WhatsApp thread
Flight, visa, and insurance handled — you show up, we've done the rest
Transparent pricing — no surprise "optional excursions" mid-trip

First conversation is free. No commitment, no pressure.

Quick Tips

  • Fly into Almaty, not Astana, unless architecture is your reason for coming
  • May–June for wildflowers and green steppe; September for golden light and no crowds
  • Two nights minimum outside Almaty — day trips don't do the landscape justice

Experiences we can build in

1

A day with eagle hunters in Almaty region (seasonal)

2

Homestay night in a yurt on the steppe

3

Central Asian food crawl — beshbarmak, plov, kazy, and Almaty's under-the-radar craft coffee scene

4

Astana add-on for the futurist architecture (Bayterek, Khan Shatyr, Nur-Alem)

Good to know

Visa

Indian passport holders currently get visa-free entry for up to 14 days — one of the easiest Central Asia entries. We'll confirm current rules at booking.

Currency

Kazakhstani Tenge (KZT). Cards work in cities; carry cash for the countryside.

Language

Kazakh and Russian. English is patchy outside hotels — our local guide travels with you.

Getting there

Direct/1-stop flights from Delhi and Mumbai to Almaty (~4–6 hrs).

Altitude

Some mountain days sit at 2,000–3,000 m. Nothing extreme, but pack a fleece.

When to go — month by month

A continent of extremes. Spring & autumn suit deserts, canyons & cities; high summer suits the alpine lakes; winter is for skiing. Avoid the steppe deep-freeze (Nov–Mar) elsewhere.

Know before you go

Entry / Visa

Indian passport holders currently benefit from a visa-free arrangement (commonly cited as up to 14 days; some sources state longer), with an eVisa option for longer stays. Sources CONFLICT on the exact duration & conditions, and rules change — confirm the current visa-free period for Indian citizens on Kazakhstan's official Migration/eVisa portal before booking. Carry proof of onward travel & accommodation.

Currency

Kazakhstani Tenge (KZT). Cards are widely accepted in cities (the Kaspi app/bank dominates local payments); carry cash for rural areas, parks & bazaars. ATMs are plentiful in cities. Notify your bank before travel.

Language

Kazakh & Russian (Russian is very widely spoken). English is limited outside hotels, tour operators & younger urbanites — a translation app is genuinely useful.

Connectivity

Cheap local SIM/eSIM (Beeline, Kcell, Tele2). Good 4G in cities & towns; patchy or absent in remote deserts & high mountains.

Getting Around

Distances are vast. Domestic flights (Air Astana, SCAT, FlyArystan) link cities; comfortable overnight trains connect the main hubs; within cities use Yandex Go/inDrive (very cheap). Nature sites (Charyn, the lakes, Altyn-Emel, Mangystau) have NO public transport — go by organised tour or hired 4x4 with driver.

Tours & 4x4

For the big nature highlights (Mangystau/Bozjyra, Altyn-Emel, Kolsai/Kaindy) a guide & 4x4 are essential — huge distances, rough roads, minimal signage and sometimes permits. Book reputable operators in advance.

Permits & Restricted Zones

Some areas need permits or have access limits — e.g. Big Almaty Lake (border/water-supply rules), certain Tian Shan & border regions, and especially Baikonur Cosmodrome (Russia-leased; authorised tours booked months ahead). Arrange via your operator.

Climate & Packing

Plan for extremes: always pack layers; serious winter gear Nov–Mar (especially Astana); strong sun protection & plenty of water for summer deserts; sturdy shoes for canyons & treks. Spring (Apr–Jun) and autumn (Sep–Oct) are the comfortable sweet spots.

Food

Hearty, meat-forward cuisine: beshbarmak (national dish), plov, manti, lagman, kazy (horse sausage), shashlik, baursak; tea is central. Vegetarians can find plov, salads, breads & Central Asian veg dishes but should ask (a useful note for Indian travellers); halal food is widely available.

Etiquette

Remove shoes in homes; accept tea & hospitality graciously (Kazakhs are famously hospitable); dress modestly at mausoleums & mosques (e.g. Turkestan); ask before photographing people.

Safety & Health

Generally safe with normal urban caution. High alpine lakes sit at altitude — acclimatise & don't overexert. Drink bottled/filtered water. Comprehensive travel insurance with remote-area & adventure cover is strongly recommended.
