Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest)
This is Bhutan's most iconic and revered monastery, clinging dramatically to a sheer cliff face about 900 meters above the Paro Valley floor. Reaching the monastery requires a challenging but rewarding two to three-hour uphill trek, which is considered a pilgrimage for locals. The incredible architecture and sacred atmosphere make the difficult journey completely worthwhile.
Paro Rinpung Dzong
Meaning "Fortress on a Heap of Jewels," this large dzong (fortress-monastery) is a stellar example of traditional Bhutanese architecture and houses the district's religious and secular administration. Its majestic whitewashed walls and tall central tower (utse) feature intricate woodwork and beautiful paintings detailing Buddhist lore. It is often the site of the vibrant annual Paro Tshechu festival and provides a wonderful introduction to the country's unique fortress design.
Buddha Dordenma
This massive, bronze, golden-gilded statue of Shakyamuni Buddha stands 51 meters tall atop a hill, offering commanding views over the entire Thimphu Valley. The statue fulfills an ancient prophecy and houses over one hundred thousand smaller Buddha statues within its giant cavity. It serves as a powerful symbol of peace and prosperity for the kingdom.
Tashichho Dzong
Located on the bank of the Wang Chhu river, this magnificent fortress serves as the seat of the Bhutanese government and houses the throne room and the offices of the King. It is also the summer residence of the central monastic body, led by the Chief Abbot (Je Khenpo). Its dramatic white exterior and traditional design are spectacular, especially when beautifully illuminated at dusk.
Punakha Dzong
Known as the "Palace of Great Happiness," Punakha Dzong is widely considered the most beautiful dzong in Bhutan, strategically situated at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. It served as the capital of Bhutan until 1955 and remains the winter residence of the Je Khenpo. The location, surrounded by jacaranda trees that bloom purple in the spring, is truly magical.
Phobjikha Valley & Gangtey
This stunning, U-shaped glacial valley is one of the most important wildlife conservation areas in Bhutan and is famous for its wide, expansive grasslands and gentle hills. It is the winter home for the highly endangered Black-necked Cranes that migrate from the Tibetan Plateau, making it a crucial birdwatching destination between October and March. The valley is overlooked by the prominent Gangtey Monastery, a large Nyingma Buddhist monastery.
